"EROICA" (excerpt)

by Dronechoir

SCHOLARS ALLIANCE exclusive

about

This recording is the first audio-only document of the Dronechoir to be published and is exclusively available to Scholars Alliance members. Arone Dyer wrote this about the process and this recording:

"Dronechoir is a special thing."

"I have no idea what the true experience is to anyone else, whether they perform in it for the first or fifth time, or hesitantly watch from the sidelines. I wrote and sang each note, recorded every movement direction and have evolved it through 19 variations over the span of 4 years. I have an overwhelming knowledge and love for it that I can’t separate, and therefore am incredibly biased."

"With that said: This is a ~24minute cross section of the vocal parts starting from a little over halfway through the hour-long piece. The vocalists who participate are privately aware only of their vocal melodies and movements they’re directed to make via a prerecorded track they listen to through an earbud. Due to the intense concentration needed to perform this, the rest of the piece is heard almost second-hand as they vacillate through levels of conscious awareness of it."

"What you as a listener in headphones or speakers, far from any aspect of the performance, can’t hear or begin to imagine, are the movements that each vocalist is making throughout the piece. Urged through space like the main character from the film Donny Darko when he sees his future, the vocalists are driven through an audience, giving sonic depth through their placement. Capturing this almost continual movement for audiophiles has been a wash, in my opinion, because even with a binaural microphone the listener will assume they have no part to play, which is not at all the case. In the span of a performance, the witness will experience their safe proximities closing in on them, often being directly interacted with to the point where the line between performer and audience is blurred and stretched. They become a barrier, a mirror, a doorway, a shameless voyeur of unexpected intimacy, and encouraged to drop their individual expectations of what another person’s performance requires of them."

"If you’re listening to this, thank you - if curiosity kicks you, experience it in person."
